Meals on the Camino de Santiago in 60 Seconds

We get lots of questions about the meals on the Camino de Santiago (Camino Frances) – we’ve collected meal highlights in this 60 second video. The video shows meals in order starting in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port all the way to Santiago de Compostela.

On our Camino, We ate mostly pilgrim meals – a few were outstanding, most were good. We ate lunch at cafes and bars as we walked through the small towns on the Camino. Because we are early risers, we normally had breakfast (cafe con Leche and a Napolitanas) in the first town with an open cafe. Breakfast meals before 8:00 AM are hard to find on the Camino.

We used the Camino Ninja app to see what towns had cafes or markets. It really helped us plan our meals on the Camino de Santiago. We only stayed at albergues a couple of times so do not have much information on those dining options.

The background picture is the approximate location for the meal. We enjoyed watching the cuisine change as we headed west towards Santiago. In Basque Country we particulary enjoyed the pinxtos. In Galicia we enoyed the calamares (squid) and the delicious cocidos (stews). While the pilgrim meal options were fairly consistend, overall we were satisfied with the meals on the Camino de Santiago.

The Camino Frances also takes you through three wine regions: Navarra, La Rioja, and Bierzo – each with their own specialties. What a treat it was to walk through vineyards and explore new wines on this trek. We would normally enjoy a bottle of local wine at the end of each day’s walk.
